Gulf and Asia News Five men sentenced to death for possessing and selling drugs 8 June, 2010
Five men were sentenced to death by the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court
yesterday after they were found guilty of possessing and dealing in
drugs in two separate cases.
One of the suspects was condemned to death in absence, according to
court records. In the first case, Abu Dhabi Police had received a
tip-off that a man from an Asian country was selling heroin. An
undercover police agent was sent to meet him after he set up a time and
place to buy 16kg of heroin.
The suspect later left the country and told the agent, another man would meet him to carry out the deal.
As the man, accompanied by another accomplice, arrived, the police arrested the two and seized the contraband.
The two led the police to a third suspect, who had aided them in smuggling the drug into the country.
In the second case, Abu Dhabi police arrested an Asian man in
cooperation with the Sharjah police, as he was offering a quantity of
heroin for sale.
Executions in the UAE are usually carried out by firing squad out of
public view. The men's cases are now expected to go to the Court of
Appeals and the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi.
If the verdict is upheld, the death sentence must be ratified by the president before being carried out.
